Pair of Bedside commodes
A pair of 18th century Chippendale period figured mahogany bedside commodes.
The figured and shaped tray tops with pierced galleries, over lift-up cupboard door above a leather lined recessed lower section, are raised upon square champfered legs.
Pairs of bedside cupboards, or ‘night tables’, as they were generally known in the 18th century, are today extremely rare. Although he does not include a drawing in the Director, Chippendale was providing similar examples to clients, ‘a large mahogany night table and necessary stool £2. 15.0′ was supplied to to Mersham le Hatch in 1767.
